The COVID-19 outbreak and Michigan's stay-at-home orders immediately changed the number of trips our residents made in spring 2020.  The Apple Mobility Trends Report shows the relative volume of direction requests per county compared to a baseline volume on January 13, 2020.  Data is sent from users' devices to the Apple Maps service and is radomized to protect privacy. ( Apple is not longer updating data since April 14th, 2022 )

COVID-19 immediately changed the types of destinations our residents visit.  The Google Mobility Reports show the 7-day moving average (calculated by SEMCOG) in the rate of visits to destinations like recreation and retail, grocery stores and pharmacies, transit stations, parks, and workplaces.   The rates of change are created with aggregated, anonymized sets of data from users who have turned on the Location History setting, which is off by default.   The median daily number of visits over the first five weeks of year 2020 serve as the baseline.  Note that while the other categories measure the change in total visitors, the Residential category shows a change in duration.   Since people already spend much of the day at places of residence, the percent change will not be as large as the other categories.

The pandemic strains the mental health of our region's residents.     Data from the Census Bureau's Houshold Pulse Survey suggest anxiety levels are elevated.   The survey asks, "Over the last 7 days, how often have you been bothered by the following problems ... Feeling nervous, anxious, or on edge?".   During Phase 1, about 25 percent of respondents reported having symptoms of  anxiety for more than half the days of the previous week.; during Phase 2, this figure settled in at around 20-25 percent of respondents.    Analysis from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) suggest the prevalence of anxiety among the U.S. adult population was about 8 percent before the pandemic.  While not a panacea, communities can help alleviate anxiety through having quality parks, public spaces, and services that allow people to safely social distance and connect with each other.  The data show a weighted percentage of responses and represent the Detroit Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Residential property is important to numerous stakeholders.  Homeownership is the largest single asset for most residents.  Owning a home creates a multiplier effect that helps local industries grow (e.g, construction, landscaping, real estate agents, and household services).  Residential property is important to local government too, for it makes up more than 70 percent of Southeast Michigan's property tax base.    This index is provided quarterly and is estimated using sales prices and appraisal data.  For this dataset, the Detroit Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is split into its Metropolitan Division (MSAD); Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills includes Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, and St Clair counties, while Detroit-Dearborn-Livonia represents Wayne county.

Housing Price Index

Building permits tell us what kind of new residential housing is being constructed.  New construction also helps the region's economy to grow - creating a multiplier effect for industries that provide goods and services to households, as well as, providing new property tax revenue to local governments and school districts.  SEMCOG collects the data from local governments in Southeast Michigan.  The data include: single-family, two-family, condominium, and multi-family units.
