Traffic Crashes with Fatal or Serious Injuries

What is it and why does it matter?

SEMCOG collects traffic crash data from the Michigan State Police, Criminal Justice Information Center (CJIC). Traffic crashes are classified by severity: fatal, serious injury, minor injury, possible injury, or no injury. Serious traffic crashes endanger the lives and livelihoods of our residents. A safe transportation network is necessary for a healthy and vibrant region.

Latest Southeast Michigan trend:

Fatal and serious injury traffic crashes jumped from just under 2,061 in 2019 to 2,346 by 2021; and in 2023, they remain elevated at 2,268 (an increase of 10% over 2019).
