What is it and why does it matter?

Educational attainment measures the share of the population (age 25 and older) by highest level of education awarded. Regions with higher levels of education tend to have greater per capita income growth, as well as, a workforce that is better prepared for knowledge-based and technical jobs.

Latest Southeast Michigan trend:

Changes in educational attainment for people age 25 and older happen gradually. Over the last 10 years (2014-2024), the share of people with an associate’s degree or more grew from 40% in 2014 to 47% in 2024. At the same time, the share of people with less than a high school degree declined from 11% in 2014 to 8% in 2024.
